A Season of Discernment - Update 3

On Sunday, June 28, 2026, we continued our season of discernment with another Town Hall conversation. Our focus was practical and important: how do we continue shaping Sunday gatherings in a way that is meaningful, shared, and sustainable?

Much of the conversation centered on reflections. After looking at a proposed calendar for the next quarter, we heard a desire to have reflections more often, possibly around twice a month, while also recognizing that this needs to be done in a way that feels sustainable. Several possibilities were named, including recorded reflections from David, occasional reflections from others in the community, Brandon reading written reflections, and using reflections from trusted outside voices.

We also discussed a specific kind of worship gathering centered on songs and scripture. This gathering would give us space to worship through a mix of hymns and contemporary songs, incorporate scripture throughout the service, and include songs that help younger folks participate. We may also invite the community to share song suggestions so our worship continues to reflect the voices and experiences of the people gathered.

Another part of the conversation focused on opportunities to engage more intentionally with the students at Winthrop Wesley. Two ideas were affirmed by the group: sharing potluck meals together and supporting Wesley's “Christmas Eve Before You Leave” (a Christmas Eve gathering before finals). These gatherings will give us simple, meaningful ways to build relationships, share life, and deepen our connection with the students whose space we are grateful to share.

Finally, we talked about what should happen when Brandon is away. The group agreed that if there is a last-minute emergency, it is okay to cancel. But when an absence is planned, we can keep things simple: gather, sing “The Welcome Table,” use a prompt question or guided discussion, and allow someone else to help lead. The goal is not to create more work, but to make space for shared ownership.

This conversation was another helpful step in our discernment. We are not trying to force The Welcome Table into a model that does not fit us. We are listening for what is already present among us: the gifts, hopes, limits, creativity, and capacity of this community. And together, we are continuing to ask how God may be inviting us to become a more sustainable and faithful expression of welcome, love, and shared ministry.

You can view a recording of the discussion here.

As a next step, we are asking everyone connected to The Welcome Table to complete our contributions survey. This survey will help us better understand the gifts, interests, capacity, and ideas within our community so that we can shape shared ministry around real people, real energy, and real availability. Whether you have a lot to offer right now, only a little, or are not sure where you fit, your response will help us listen well and move forward together.

You can access the survey here.

Thank you for being part of this season of discernment and for helping us imagine the future of The Welcome Table together.
