This article reflects on the historic role of Black churches in protecting voting rights, especially in moments when legal protections have been weakened. In response to the Supreme Court’s April 29, 2026 decision narrowing the reach of the Voting Rights Act, Traci Blackmon reminds readers that the Black church has long done more than encourage civic participation; it has organized, educated, protected, and empowered communities to claim their voice. The piece is a call to remember that democracy is not only defended in courts, but also through faithful, local, organized action rooted in courage, community, and hope.
