For more than 170 years, St. Ann’s Church for the Deaf has been a haven of belonging and faith for New York City’s Deaf community — a place where worship happens entirely in sign language and connection transcends denominational lines. Though its membership has dwindled over time, the appointment of the Rev. William Erich Krengel, one of the few deaf priests in the Episcopal Church, has brought renewed hope for revival and deeper community. As the congregation gathers each week in the basement of St. George’s Church, their worship continues to embody the enduring truth that God speaks — and listens — in every language, including sign.
