In light of the IRS’s recent reversal of its stance on political speech in churches, progressive congregations are being urged not to shy away from political engagement. Rather than avoiding politics out of fear of partisanship or division, churches should adopt guiding principles: build power rather than seek it, practice collaborative “power-with” instead of “power-over,” and engage in diverse, pluralistic coalitions. With these values, progressive churches can pursue justice-oriented activism that remains rooted in accountability, community, and their deepest theological convictions.
